Vision Exams in Sikeston & Poplar Bluff

An eye exam consists of a series of tests performed right here at Dr. Obermark Eye Health Care, assessing your vision and ability to focus on objects near and far. Having your eyes checked regularly could detect potentially threatening eye diseases that can be treated if caught early.

What To Expect

First, we start with a visual acuity test, where you read letters from a chart to measure the sharpness of your vision. We use a projected eye chart to test your vision at a distance and a hand-held chart to measure your near vision.

Then, we perform a retinoscopy test, which helps determine an approximate prescription for your eyeglasses. We'll have you'll focus on a letter at a distance and shine a light into your eye to see how your eye focuses. This gives us a better understanding of where to start the refraction.

Next, a refraction test measures the exact prescription for your eyeglasses. During the refraction, we'll put an instrument, called a phoropter, in front of your eyes. We will show you a series of lens choices, and you'll pick which choice is the clearest. Based on your choice, we'll change the lens power to find the best fit for your prescription.

We also use an instrument called a slit lamp, which is a light that we look into your eye with and measure the structures of your eye under high magnification. We can detect a wide range of eye diseases with this instrument, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and corneal ulcers.

During your routine check, we may want to dilate your eyes. This makes your pupils larger, so we can see the inside structure of your eye better. It allows for the most thorough examination of the health of the inside of the eye. The effects of the drop can cause blurriness and make you light-sensitive, so we recommend bringing sunglasses. We can also provide disposables for you if you do not have a pair of sunglasses. The drops start to wear off after a couple of hours depending on the strength of the drop.

During your comprehensive exam, we may recommend other tests depending on what we find. Our main goal is to help you achieve the best eye health possible, which is why we always perform comprehensive and complete exams. Call us today to schedule your appointment!
