Eye Exam at Obermark Eye Health Care in Sikeston & Poplar Bluff, MO

FC – Eye Exam at Obermark Eye Health Care

Complete eye exams are necessary to detect conditions before they produce symptoms. During the examination, physicians conduct visual acuity and focus testing for both distance and near vision, and assess eye health to detect any impending problems early.

At Obermark Eye Health Care, our comprehensive eye exams in Poplar Bluff MO and Sikeston MO include a series of vision and health tests to ensure your eyes are healthy and your vision is clear. We also have pediatric exams (for instance, children can be seen as young as 6 months old) and recommend early screenings, as vision issues can occur in childhood.

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

Our step-by-step eye exam thoroughly checks everything related to your eyesight and eye health. Major sections are:

  • Visual Acuity Test: We test the acuity of your eyes at varying distances. You will read letters on a screen chart for distant vision and on a handheld chart for near vision. This determines how well you see and whether you require glasses or a prescription change.
  • Retinoscopy (Pre-Refraction): To approximate an initial prescription, the physician shines a light into each eye while you are looking at a target. This indicates how light is deflected in the eye and provides a starting point for precise refraction.
  • Refraction Test: Using a phoropter (an instrument with interchangeable lenses), we refine your prescription. You will view the chart through the phoropter and decide which lens choices make the chart letters most distinct. We tweak the lens power until your visual acuity is best. This sets the exact eyeglass or contact lens prescription.
  • Slit-Lamp (Biomicroscope) Examination: We view the front and interior of your eyes with high-powered magnification through a slit-lamp microscope. This tool allows us to thoroughly examine structures such as the cornea, iris, lens, and retina. It also enables us to identify diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or corneal ulcers at an early stage.
  • Pupil Dilation: During most exams, we dilate (expand) your pupils using eye drops. Pupil dilation provides a clearer view of the inner eye, including the retina and the optic nerve head. While blurriness or light sensitivity may last several hours, the drops provide a comprehensive retinal examination. We suggest wearing sunglasses to make your post-dilation visit more comfortable.
  • Additional Tests (as necessary): Based on your age, symptoms, or risk factors, we may have additional screenings. For instance, intraocular pressure testing may be done for glaucoma screening or visual field testing. Our primary intention is to tailor the exam to your specific needs, enabling you to achieve optimal eye health.

These procedures, taken together, provide an overall picture of your vision and eye health. Throughout the exam, our optometrist will also review any symptoms or issues you are experiencing, check your medical and family history, and address any questions you may have regarding eye care.
